When a gopher creates an underground "tunnel" where does the earth go that was in the tunnel space?

Some of the earth is usually in a mound around the gopher hole. But that amount is not nearly enough to account for the earth that was removed by the gopher when creating the long tunnel. So where is the earth that was in the tunnel? Does the gopher put it someplace else?
