In a personal statement, can you include that you are currently in an abusive household?
I need to write a personal statement for a college I am applying to. I live in an abusive household where my parents do not want me to go to college and I will be pursuing it 100% on my own without their financial or moral support. They do not allow me to leave the house except for work, monitor my phone calls, and I have a brother who beats me up. I have a case with the police already so it is not unknown in the eyes of the law, but I am hoping to escape through college by pursuing becoming an occupational therapist. It is my dream because my current job is working with disabled children. I work with them full time, then college part time at night, and then go home to the abuse. I don't know if it is appropriate to include this in my personal statement but it is a big piece of what drives me to work hard; to escape and better myself. Should I include this, and if so, what is an appropriate way to address it?
