How to go from undergrad to graduate studies?

Sometimes a program will take you on as a provisionally accepted student if they see enough promise for you. I'm currently applying to grad school for English to pursue a creative writing concentration, my major in college was communication and media arts. However, I feel that I have a good chance of being provisionally accepted since I have some creative writing experience, and professional job experience as an editor. Do you have any experience at all with the history field? I'd suggest getting a bit involved in the field so you have something to at least present to the institution you're applying to, just to beef up your chance of acceptance.
