What is the soil like in abandoned agricultural plots?

Is it fertile, infertile, sandy, silty, etc? I am doing a report and have found that my flora likes to grow in abandoned agricultural plots and am trying to find some reason for this. Any ideas as to why a plant would prefer a space such as this? Would previous disturbance have anything to do with the ability for herbs to grow?
