What is the best way to defeat the Table Tennis "champion" on Wii Sports Resorts?

My level/points on the table tennis is about 1530, which is about 30 more than the "champion". I have never been able to get more than 2 points against this Mii. It seems like every time I hit the ball it goes directly to the other Mii. I try twisting and turning the remote different ways and can never seem to hit the ball away from the "champion" Mii.
